Organizers of the Wimbledon tournament, the third Grand Slam of the season, announced last month that they were excluding Russian and Belarusian players from the 2022 edition, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A unilateral decision that was condemned by many players, but also by the ATP and WTA.
This Friday, the ATP announced that it would not distribute points to players participating in the tournament as a result. “The possibility for players of any nationality to register in tournaments according to their qualifications and without discrimination is fundamental to our circuit. Wimbledon’s decision to bar Russians and Belarusians from playing in Britain this summer goes against that principle and the integrity of the ATP ranking system. In these circumstances, it is with great regret and despite our reluctance we cannot withdraw ATP points from the 2022 Wimbledon edition. Can we read a press release on the ATP website.
On the other hand, grass tournaments in Queens (ATP 500) and Eastbourne (ATP 250) retain their ATP endowments. The organization states that during these tournaments, Russian and Belarusian players will have the opportunity to play elsewhere than in the United Kingdom, which will not happen during Wimbledon.
