The Center Hospitalier de la Cte Basque in Bayonne and the Ani Enya Center in Cambo are combining their knowledge to improve cancer care in the Basque Country.
The Basque Country is acquiring two new devices that will improve the daily lives of cancer patients: a day hospital for adjuvant oncology care and a post-cancer recovery pathway. “The management of cancer does not end with the treatment of the disease alone. This pathology requires a global approach, this is the role of supportive care. A patient may require management during their remission. This is what our establishments in the Basque Country offer”, explain the managers of the Center Hospitalier de la Cte Basque and the Ani Enya Center in Cambo.
The first was opened a year ago at CHCB with the aim of “offering a comprehensive and personalized curriculum with specific treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery)”. It is staffed with a full-time doctor and two nurses whose mission is to coordinate the patient’s care path. Support for pain, dietary, psychological, social, family, professional, addictions, aesthetics or physical activities are all part of the mission of day hospital teams. Around 400 patients participated in it during the year 2021.

This year, the support offered during cancer recovery has expanded. The Ani Enia de Cambo Medical Center complements the services of the CHCB with care for patients in the remission phase. “Some people express physical, psychological or other difficulties at the end of treatment; return to everyday life is not always evident”, note health professionals from the two establishments.
This course is oriented in three directions: psychological support, dietary assessment and monitoring and adapted physical activity. “In agreement with the oncologist or attending physician, the patient chooses one or the other establishments, an evaluation is systematically proposed, and access to this area is fully supported”, he says.
