First electricity exchange on France-UK cable on May 25

The first exchange of electricity on a cable connecting France and the United Kingdom will take place on May 25, channel tunnel operator GetLink announced on Friday, welcoming the “world first”.

All pre-commissioning phases have been finalized and Gatelink will be able to start its commercial operations with British transmission system operator National Grid and French RTE, they announced in a press release. He further indicated, “The first exchange of electricity through a 52 km long cable installed in the Channel Tunnel will take place on May 25, 2022, thus forming a world.”

According to the group, under the name “Aleclink”, the power cable spanning the tunnel between France and England has a capacity of one gigawatt, or “equivalent to the electricity consumption of 1.65 million homes”. “ElecLink will contribute to the security of supply and decarbonization of energy consumed and allow access to electricity,” he assured in the press release.

This new interconnection between France and the United Kingdom should bring in a turnover of €100 million and an additional gross operating surplus (EBITDA) of €80 million for the full year, according to forecasts made in February.
