North African countries were not unanimous on a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russian military intervention in Ukraine.

The resolution, put to vote on Wednesday, was approved by 141 countries, an overwhelming majority of the international community. Only 5 states voted against it, including North Korea, Belarus and Syria. At the same time, 35 countries including China abstained.

Algeria has also chosen to abstain, along with several African states including Mali, South Africa and Angola. Thus the exceptions are North Africa, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt voting for this resolution.

Morocco, for its part, did not participate in the vote on this proposal, piloted by the European Union in coordination with Kyiv.

During this “extraordinary emergency session”, held last Monday and Tuesday, the UN General Assembly showed an overwhelming majority of countries condemning Russia’s behavior and calling for an “end of the fighting”.

The resolution was inspired by a text rejected by Russia in the UN Security Council last week because of a veto.

The UN document “demands that Russia immediately ceases using force against Ukraine” and that it “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces” from Ukrainian territory. The resolution “condemns Russia’s decision to alert its nuclear forces”.
