Stan & Ollie – RTBF TV

Biography of the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. During their 1953 UK tour, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy felt their popularity waned. They struggle to fill small theaters but with advertising they manage to achieve success and fill large halls. As business grows, Laurel learns from her producer that her Robin Hood movie will not be made, hiding the truth from Hardy. Soon after, Hardy’s health begins to decline. The biopic centers on a 1953 tour, during which Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy realize their popular decline as personal issues begin to have a greater impact on their professional lives. A “cursed” attack would eventually end with Oliver Hardy, already weakened by a heart attack. Even if the ghosts and trials of the past shake their pair’s perseverance, this final tour is a unique opportunity to realize how much, humanly, they mean to each other. We also discover the importance played by the two wives, downright central in the relationship between the two comedians. And again, both the actors are amazing. We also forget that these are not “real” actors and magic happens. Stan & Olly is a moving and nostalgic film made with care based on a subtle screenplay by Jeff Pope (to whom we attribute “Philomena” by Stephen Frears). Director: John S Baird. Production: BBC Films (UK/Canada/USA 2018). With Steve Kogan (Stan Laurel), John C. Reilly (Oliver Hardy), Shirley Henderson (Lucille Hardy), Nina Arianda (Ida Kitaeva Laurel).
