In the UK, the sale of diesel or petrol trucks will be banned from 2040 at the latest. This is stated in the British government’s “Transport Decarbonization Plan”, which aims to reduce emissions from the transport sector, including aviation, to zero by 2050.
The ban on sales will come in several phases. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson previously brought forward a planned sales ban on new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040 to 2030. By 2035, the sale of trucks with pollution from 3.5 to 26 tons will be banned, and the latest one will be banned from 2040. of heavy duty diesel or petrol trucks.
For aviation, the goal is to achieve zero emissions for domestic flights by 2040 and for international flights by 2050.
“It’s a big challenge, no doubt,” UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky News. “This is the most profound change we’ve ever seen in our transportation network.”
“Reliable Plans”
Employers’ body CBI welcomed the plan, but warned that it should be accompanied by “credible plans to accelerate the development of clean technologies such as hydrogen and environmentally friendly jet fuel”. There must also be the necessary charging infrastructure to be able to charge all electric vehicles.
Environmental organization Greenpeace regrets that the plans are currently limited to the transportation sector. She sees a great risk in relying solely on technological advancements as far as aviation is concerned. “If that happens everyone will be happy, but if progress doesn’t happen we need a mechanism to reduce emissions.”
The United Kingdom will host the COP26 climate conference in November. It will take place in the Scottish city of Glasgow.
