Goals: Amond (1’) Ellison (77’)
Newport County were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade as familiar face Kevin Ellison cancelled out Padraig Amond’s early opener.
Morecambe have proved themselves as a somewhat ‘bogey side’ for County in recent years. Since their return to the Football League, the Exiles have failed to overcome the Shrimps on home soil.
The hosts started the game full of confidence as Padraig Amond netted the opener after just 25 seconds. The ball fell to Robbie Willmott on the corner of the area and he drilled in a pass to Jamille Matt. The forward’s effort was superbly stopped by Barry Roche but Amond nodded in the rebound for his sixth goal of the season.
Impressive link-up play between Antoine Semenyo and Dan Butler soon followed as the Bristol City loanee almost doubled the Exiles’ lead. Semenyo found Butler in acres of space on the wing before the left-back whipped a cross into the box. Semenyo did well to guide his header on target but Roche was equal to it in the Morecambe net.
Vadaine Oliver came close to equalising for the visitors in the 19th minute but Joe Day produced a fantastic save to deny the striker. Rhys Oates sent Oliver through on goal and into a one-on-one situation but Day was equal to the effort.
Set-piece-specialist, Matty Dolan came so close to producing a brilliant free kick in the 35th minute. The midfielder struck from thirty five yards but his effort whistled past the post as the score remained at 1-0.
After the break, Jordan Cranston decided to take matters into his own hands for the Shrimps with a shot from distance. His effort almost caught Day off guard but luckily for the Exiles ‘keeper, it flew just over the bar.
The Exiles wasted another chance to double their lead in the 67th minute when Semenyo’s effort cleared the bar. A free-kick from Dolan fell to the youngster but he couldn’t quite keep his shot down as County were left wondering how they weren’t 2-0 up.
County were forced to pay for wasting their chances when Kevin Ellison came back to haunt them once again. The 39-year-old slotted beneath Day in the 77th minute to pull the Shrimps level.
Ellison’s strike proved to be the final play of the game as Newport were again left frustrated by Jim Bentley’s men.
