First half goals from Josh Sheehan, Jamille Matt and Padraig Amond sent Newport County on their way to a 3-1 victory against Northampton Town in Sky Bet League Two.
The win sees Mike Flynn’s side finish the day in fourth place, five points behind leaders Milton Keynes Dons.
The Exiles have now won three consecutive games at home in the league, as they look to maintain their League Two playoff position heading into the new year.
The hosts started the brighter of the two sides, and made the perfect start with only five minutes played. Wing-back Dan Butler cut inside and squared the ball to Josh Sheehan, who’s first time shot curled into the bottom left corner to put the Exiles ahead.
Keith Curle’s side were level only five minutes later. Newport failed to clear a free-kick into the area, and Andy Williams got to the ball first and fired home the equaliser.
Jamille Matt continued his fine start to the season, directing Mark O’Brien’s header into the left corner to restore his side’s lead just before the half hour mark.
The Exiles doubled their advantage just three minutes later, when Padraig Amond fired into the top left corner after a good move down the left side.
Keith Curle’s side had a good opportunity to score their second when a cross from the left found goalscorer Williams, unmarked in the area, but he was unable to direct his header on goal.
Despite the best efforts of both sides, clear-cut chances were few and far between in the second half.
It took until the 71st minute for the host’s to craft their first real chance after the break. Quick passing just outside the area played in Matt, who took a touch and saw his shot deflected out for a corner.
The Cobblers came closest to getting a goal back with three minutes left on the clock. A ball into the box from the right side was well cut out by defender Fraser Franks to deny Northampton a goal-scoring opportunity.
The Exiles travel to North Wales to face Wrexham on Saturday in an all-Welsh tie in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup.
